A talk by Guest Speaker John Smith William Stukeley, noted 18th century antiquary and Vicar of All Saints, 1730-47, was a keen student of architecture and an enthusiastic gardener. While in Stamford he published his archaeological discoveries at Avebury and Stonehenge and these much influenced his thoughts on garden design. He totally refurbished his Barn Hill house, planned a Palladian triumphal arch spanning the road, and created an impressive garden. John Smith is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London and this talk is based on his research for an article in the Antiquaries Journal. |
